After the king and his uncles departed, the business of the Parlement resumed, including the inquiry into the Carrouges–Le Gris affair. As August turned to September, the case would soon enter its third month. The knight and the squire were prisoners of Paris, free to move about the city but required to appear at the Palais de Justice whenever summoned, which could happen at any time.

Marguerite, by now at least eight months pregnant, was imprisoned not just by the city, and by the house where she and her husband were staying, but increasingly by her own body as well. Waiting for her pregnancy to reach its term, and for the Parlement to reach a decision in the case, must have been an agonizing ordeal in the unfamiliar surroundings.
